Sumitomo Rubber Joins the RE100 International Environmental Initiative

Sumitomo Rubber Industries, Ltd. is pleased to announce that we have officially endorsed “RE100,” an international environmental initiative that brings together companies all over the world with the shared aim of transitioning to 100% renewable energy for all of their electric power needs.

In light of accelerating climate change and other major recent developments affecting the most pressing issues that our global society faces today, the Sumitomo Rubber Group came to the conclusion that a new policy, one based on long-term perspectives to foresee the world of 2050, would be essential to the sustained growth and development of both our group and society as a whole. And so, we formulated and unveiled our “Driving Our Future Challenge 2050*1” in August of 2021.
Joining RE100 was a natural next step for our group, as this initiative perfectly aligns with one of the key targets of Driving Our Future Challenge 2050: to achieve carbon neutrality (Scopes 1 and 2) by the year 2050.
Our endorsement of RE100 was made possible thanks to support from the “Japan Climate Leaders’ Partnership (JCLP),” a coalition of companies committed to working toward a sustainable carbon-free society.
Through our involvement in RE100, the Sumitomo Rubber Group will be working to redouble our efforts toward the realization of a sustainable future.

■RE100
RE100 is a cooperative initiative that brings together some of the world’s most influential companies, united by a shared commitment to making the transition to 100% renewable energy for all of their electric power needs. By uniting so many major companies in this way, this initiative aims to send a message to both investors and policymakers, making it perfectly clear that now is the time to accelerate the transition to renewable energy. With combined annual sales in excess of 4.5 Trillion US Dollars, the companies participating in RE100 represent some of the biggest players in a wide range of industries, including many companies on the Global Fortune 500 List. Led by The Climate Group*2 in partnership with CDP*3, RE100 is also part of the “We Mean Business Coalition.” Meanwhile, as an official regional partner, the Japan Climate Leaders’ Partnership (JCLP) supports Japanese companies in joining RE100 as well as in efforts to make the transition to renewable energy.

■Japan Climate Leaders’ Partnership (JCLP)
Formed in 2009, JCLP is a coalition of Japanese companies united by a shared awareness that the realization of a carbon-free society will require industry in general to approach the matter as a crisis, which means taking positive action without delay. JCLP’s 225 member companies (as of December 2022) include many of Japan’s leading companies in a wide range of industries, with combined annual sales on the order of 130 Trillion Japanese Yen. Collectively, these companies use approximately 65TWh of electric power each year. (Note: This figure is based on reference values and converted values and includes power usage at overseas subsidiaries). Their common aim is to live up to society’s expectations of companies during this period of transition toward a carbon-free society. Since becoming a regional partner of the international NPO “The Climate Group” in 2017, JCLP has acted as a liaison and coordinator for the RE100, EV100 and EP100 initiatives in Japan. JCLP also actively works together with various institutes and municipalities both in Japan and overseas, including entering a comprehensive partnership agreement with the City of Yokohama and cosponsoring “RE Action – Declaring 100% Renewable” as a new framework that is unique to Japan.
