Sumitomo Rubber Establishes New Tire Wear Detection Technology~Announcing the Next Evolution of Our Proprietary SENSING CORE Technology~
Feb. 09. 2021
Sumitomo Rubber Industries, Ltd. is pleased to announce that we have established a groundbreaking new technology for detecting tire wear levels. This latest breakthrough represents the next evolution of our proprietary SENSING CORE※ Tire Sensing Technology, adding tire wear to the list of conditions that this innovative technology can detect—a list that already includes tire pressure, tire load and road conditions. With this and other advancements to come, our SENSING CORE technology will continue to contribute to the realization of a new Mobility Society by supporting the rise of CASE, MaaS and other new innovations that are already transforming the automotive industry.
※Sumitomo Rubber Develops "SENSING CORE" Tire Sensing Technology (News Release Issued on May 16, 2017)
Our proprietary SENSING CORE is an advanced technology that is able to detect various conditions related to tires and the road, all thanks to our extensive knowhow related to the dynamic behavior of tires (cultivated over many years of developing high-performance tires) as well as specialized digital filtering technology that can analyze and interpret wheel speed signals (which are transmitted as tires rotate). One thing that sets this technology apart is the fact that it uses tires as its sensors, meaning that it requires no additional sensor installation and is completely maintenance-free. Further, by sharing wheel speed signal data and other pertinent information over the cloud, SENSING CORE also allows for cloud-based detection of potential issues at the regional level.
Taking full advantage of the extensive knowhow that we have cultivated over many years of developing high-performance tires, with this latest advancement, SENSING CORE technology is now able to detect tire wear levels by calculating tread rigidity based on wheel speed signals, engine data and other vehicle information. This technology not only alerts drivers about the wear condition of their tires, but also allows for centralized management of tire conditions over the cloud. As such, SENSING CORE holds enormous potential for future applications among mobility service and transport service providers, ensuring the overall safety of their operations while greatly reducing maintenance costs, etc.

The Sumitomo Rubber Group launched SMART TYRE CONCEPT with the aim of accelerating the development of tires and peripheral services to better respond to the needs of CASE, MaaS and other new innovations that are already transforming the automotive industry, and SENSING CORE is one of the key technologies that we have been developing as part of our SMART TYRE CONCEPT. Moving forward, we will continue working to provide our own unique value in an effort to contribute to the realization of a safer Mobility Society for greater overall peace of mind, all based on the concept slogan of “Tires—Connecting with Vehicles, Connecting with People, Connecting with Society.”
